For decades, the silver-mercury amalgam was the most common filling material used in dental offices, and still is for many practices. While they are an affordable restoration, amalgams have certain shortcomings. Metal does not fasten well to your teeth, so decay can and does slowly seep back into your tooth. But the main reason many of our patients are switching to white bonded fillings has to do with their appearance. Many people just don't want an ugly black plug in their teeth.
